How To Create SSH Keys With PuTTY to Connect to a VPS

Secure Shell (SSH) is a network protocol that allows secure communication between computers. SSH keys are used to authenticate connections between computers over SSH. PuTTY is a popular SSH client for Windows.

Step 1: Download and Install PuTTY

Download the latest version of PuTTY from the official website and install it on your Windows computer.

Step 2: Launch PuTTYgen

Launch PuTTYgen from the Start menu or by running the "puttygen.exe" executable.

Step 3: Generate a New Key Pair

Click the "Generate" button to generate a new key pair. Move your mouse around the blank area to create randomness for the key pair. Set the key type to "RSA" and the key size to "2048".

Step 4: Save the Public and Private Keys

Save the public key by clicking the "Save public key" button and the private key by clicking the "Save private key" button. Choose a secure location to save the keys.

Step 5: Copy the Public Key to the VPS

Copy the contents of the public key file to the clipboard. Connect to your VPS using PuTTY and paste the public key into the "Authorized Keys" section of the SSH configuration file on the VPS. Save and close the file.

Step 6: Connect to the VPS

Launch PuTTY and enter the IP address or hostname of your VPS. Under the "Connection" menu, expand the "SSH" submenu and select "Auth". Click the "Browse" button and select the private key file you saved earlier. Click "Open" to connect to the VPS.
